I love this balsamic marinade because it is a delicious combination of sweet and tangy, slightly salty and savoury. In other words, this balsamic tofu is herby, garlicky, a little bit sticky, crispy and most important, it is delicious! This tofu is perfect for salads, served over rice or as an addition to the buddha bowl. I love to snack on it as well; it is ideal to satisfy your savoury cravings. Moreover, it will make a killer sandwich! Just imagine… Rye bread or airy sourdough topped with creamy avocado followed by crispy tofu, few slices of tomato and basil leaves… Happy days!
Other ways to enjoy this tasty balsamic marinade
We all know that tofu is an excellent source of plant-based protein, but on its own, it is rather bland. This is when a good tasty marinade comes in handy. I wanted to keep this recipe super simple, so I used minimal ingredients, but oh boy.. it did produce an excellent vegan and gluten-free meal! To add even more protein here, I decided to serve the balsamic tofu over quinoa, and I loved it. By the way, you can always make some extra marinade and use it as a dressing to your salads, buddha bowls, and it’s delicious over quinoa.
Also good to know that tofu is a plant source of iron and calcium, Vitamin B1, copper and zinc. Pure goodness. However, lots of people are worried about soy products, so my philosophy here is

Certainly, tofu is a terrific ingredient to play with. You can dress it however you like, and it will compliment your meal perfectly. Here I went for firm tofu, and I gently pressed it to remove excess liquid. This way, it can absorb even more of the marinade, which equals more flavour. Another great hack is to freeze tofu beforehand. As a result of freezing, tofu will shrink slightly and push excess water out.
As I mentioned earlier, this Balsamic tofu is a great speedy meal. If you can leave it in the marinade overnight, then it is great. However, you can make the marinade, leave the tofu in the marinade for 15 minutes, and it will be a deliciously easy and vegan meal.
Easy and Delicious Balsamic Tofu
- 1 block firm tofu
- 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- 1 tsp Italian herbs
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- salt, pepper
- Whisk all the ingredients for the marinade
- Slice the tofu and gently toss it in the marinade
- If the time allows leave it to soak up the flavour for 15-30 minutes(you can do it the night ahead)
- When ready to cook, preheat the pan on the medium heat with a drizzle of olive oil and add tofu slices
- Fry on one side till golden then flip it to another side and cook it for extra 30 seconds
- Serve straight away or save for later
